Biological psychology: helps researchers understand behavior through the relationship between heredity (genetic factors) and the environment

Nature vs Nurture

  • Nature = heredity/biological/genetic/disposition
  • Nurture = environmental/external (family, school, community)

Research in Nature vs Nurture

  • Twin studies: determines the role of nature (inherited), uses monozigotic twins
  • Adoption studies: investigate the role of nurture (upbringing) when one of the twins is adopted
  • Family studies: heritability of outcomes (e.g. diseases), conducted among siblings, parents, or children to assess genetic links; also how individuals change and interact within the family
