Agonists: mimic neurotransmitters

Antagonists: inhibit/block neurotransmitters

Reuptake: reduces the effect of neurotransmitters by recycling/reabsorbing them

Reuptake inhibitor: agonistic (increase the effect of neurotransmitter)

SSRI: major anti-depressant medication; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor

Dependence = addiction

Tolerance: needs larger amount of substance to reach the same effect

Withdrawal symptoms: craving for the substance; opposite of drug's effect

Depressants: Alcohol; sedatives, tranquilizers; opiates/narcotics (morphine, heroin)

Stimulant: Nicotine (cigarettes); caffeine; meth; cocaine

Hallucinogens: marijuana, LSD
